The Foundation maintains a museum and library of works by and about Neihardt. It conducts a variety of programs designed to:

  • Educate our children, young people and the general public using the literary and thematic legacy of John G. Neihardt
  • Preserve the heritage of the Great Plains, and its great voices, those of pioneer and Native American, both past and present
  • Inspire all people--especially young people--to live lives of strong moral conviction and purpose in light of their noble heritages

Bancroft, Nebraska

Bancroft, Nebraska, the home of the Neihardt Center, is a community of 500 people located in Cuming County in northeastern Nebraska. There are many old and new businesses in town, and the community has several projects to enhance its future.

One of those projects is construction of a new K-12 school and gymnasium. In addition to its core curriculum, the high school offers vocational courses, including instruction in home economics, business and industrial arts. Bancroft is part of the Northeast Community College area that serves 20 counties in northeast Nebraska from the main campus in Norfolk. Wayne State College, located 32 miles from Bancroft, offers 53 majors and 35 minors in eight academic divisions.

The Bancroft Public Library, 104 E. Popular St., contains 8,170 volumes and has an average circulation of 26,069. The library is fully computerized and offers internet access to the public. The library offers a pre-school story hour and a summer reading program.

The Bancroft Community Building, located at 502 Main Street, has three levels--basement, main floor, and mezzanine--available to rent for parties, wedding receptions and dances.

The Bancroft park has playground equipment, tables, shelters, ball fields, and a camping area with four hook ups. Annual celebrations include the John G. Neihardt Day in August and Harvest Fest in September. Several ball tournaments are also held throughout the summer.
